Carsten Hess

Vice President, Head of Corporate Representation Brussels

Deutsche Post DHL

Carsten Hess was born in 1963 in Hamburg, Germany. After graduating law at the Law Faculty of the University of Hamburg he worked for the US company Institute for International Research and served for the Berlin Government and public administration between 1992 to 1995 including an internship in the Brussels office of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, followed by a 6 months-period in the Brussels office of Stanbrook and Hooper in 1995.

In 1996, he changed to General Electric as Counsel European Affairs covering a broad range of policy issues (i.e. broadcasting and media, e-commerce, data privacy, environment, trade and competition).

December 1999, he joined WorldCom (formerly MCI WorldCom now Verizon Business) as Director European Affairs and helped to launch MCI WorldCom's European Affairs Office in Brussels in January 2000. He coordinated WorldCom’s regulatory issues at EU level and was involved in the WorldCom-Sprint Merger in 2000. During the same period he was further WorldCom’s Director for EMEA e-commerce policy, data privacy and regulatory issues and advocated on the German Telecoms Bill for MCI Germany in 2003/2004.

In July 2004, Carsten Hess became Head of Corporate Representative Office of Deutsche Post World Net (since April 2009 Deutsche Post DHL) in Brussels and is involved in policy and regulatory issues for the group with a focus on trade, transport, technology, competition, environmental, financial services and social policies. In January 2009, he became Vice President.

In November 2008, Carsten Hess initiated the Alliance for European Logistics (AEL) which includes Logistics companies, Supplier industries and customers of Logistic services. In 2009 he became Chairman of the Alliance for European Logistics (AEL).
