Erl B. WilkieAfter a long career in Civil Engineering both in the private and public sectors designing mainly marine structures Erl Wilkie became the head of the sustainable transport at Glasgow City Council. He was appointed Chief Executive of Cycling Scotland in 2003 when this organisation was launched. He is also the Managing Director of Transport Planning and Engineering Ltd which is one of Scotlands leading sustainable transport consultancies. TP&E is a social enterprise company and a subsidiary of Cycling Scotland. Cycling Scotlands aim is to integrate cycling into modern living as a sustainable mode of transport, as a means of exercise and a strong contributor to the Scottish tourist economy. Erl believes that this integration process can only properly take place if cycling and walking are recognised as legitimate modes of transport and therefore become a leading feature of the transport hierarchy. Cycling and walking must therefore be designed into all major transport schemes particularly those which set out to integrate transport modes. It is fundamental to create a sustainable transport environment which caters for the needs of all citizens without contributing adversely to climate change. |
