Mr. Ilkka TuomiMr. Ilkka Tuomi is CEO of Meaning Processing Ltd., a private research centre located in Espoo, Finland. From 2002 to 2005, he worked at the European Commission's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS), Seville, Spain, and from 1987 to 2001 at Nokia Research Center in various posts, most recently as Principal Scientist, Information Society and Knowledge Management. In 1999-2001, he was visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where he conducted research on innovation networks, Internet-related innovations and open source development models. Dr. Tuomi has been member of the European Commission's High-Level Socio-Economic Expert Group on Information Society, and he has served on committees and working groups on telematics, learning technologies, Internet regulation, research ethics, and economic development. In 1997-9 he was a sub-group chairman for the European Industrial Research Management Association (EIRMA) working group on Corporate Knowledge Management. In 1994-96, he was a member in EIRMA working group on Long-Term Planning in a Continuously Changing World, chairing the sub-group on emerging models for long-term planning. He has been expert member of the European Commission's "Scenarios for Ambient Intelligence in 2010" group and ICT & IS panel in the Commission's "futures@europe.2010" project, as well as expert member in Commission's working groups on research ethics and digital identity. He has been a member of the high-level Transatlantic Dialogue on Broadcasting and the Information Society (TaDoBatIS), and in 1999-2000 he was an expert member in the Institute for the Future's Global Innovation Outlook project in Menlo Park, California. He has served on the boards of several Finnish societies, including the Finnish Artificial Intelligence Society. He has been an executive board member of the Finnish Information Society Forum, and twice nominated member of the Scientific Council of the Finnish National Fund for Research and Development (SITRA). Mr. Tuomi has written five books, chapters for over 20 books, and several widely read academic articles. His texts have been used as background material for the development of national, regional, and European research strategies, the World Summit on Information Society, Commission communications, and the revision of the eEurope strategy. His work has been quoted in the international press, including the Guardian (U.K.), El Pas (E), El Mundo (E), NyTeknik (S), Focus (D), New York Times (USA), Nikkei Information Strategy (Japan), Computerworld, New Scientist, and Business 2.0, and his research has been used to revise the editorial stylebook entry on Moore's Law in the San Jose Mercury News. His most recent book, Networks of Innovation, was published by the Oxford University Press in 2002/2003, and in paperback in February 2006.
