Dr. Michiharu NAKAMURA joined the Central Research Laboratory (CRL) of
Hitachi, Ltd. in 1967, after receiving his M.Sc. degree in Physics from
the Graduate School of Science at the University of Tokyo. As a
researcher, he worked on the development of novel electronics devices and
their commercialization, and contributed to the incubation of distributed
feedback semiconductor lasers and high-speed electronics that are widely
used in optical communication networks today. He received his Ph.D.
degree from the University of Tokyo in 1975 for related research. He
also participated in the development of SONET optical network systems, and
was a visiting researcher at the California Institute of Technology from
1972 to 1973.
In 1992, he became the 10th General Manager of Hitachi CRL. As GM
of Hitachi CRL, he oversaw advanced R&D in the fields of information
& communication technologies, electronics and life sciences, and
expanded global R&D activities. From August 2000 until April 2001, he
was Vice President of the Corporate Venture Capital Fund of Hitachi, Ltd.,
before assuming the position of Head of the Research and Development Group
of Hitachi, Ltd., a position he held until April 2004 when he was
appointed Executive Vice President and Executive Officer of Hitachi, Ltd.,
responsible for R&D and new business incubation across the Hitachi
Group. He assumed his current position of Hitachi Fellow in April
2007.
Dr. Nakamura is a Fellow of the IEEE and IEICE, and a member of The
Japan Federation of Engineering Societies, The Japan Society of Applied
Physics, The Physical Society of Japan, and The Electrochemical Society of
Japan. He is currently serving as the Vice Chairman of the
Nanotechnology Industry Creation Initiative (NBCI), and also as the
Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Strategies for R&D Priority Areas of
the Japan Business Federation, stimulating nation-wide research throughout
academia and industry.
